The Redwoods
(click for full text)
“... This is their temple, vaulted high,
And here we pause with reverent eye,
With silent tongue and awe-struck soul;
For here we sense life’s proper goal.
To be like these, straight, true and fine,
To make our world, like theirs, a shrine;
Sink down, Oh, traveller, on your knees,
God stands before you in these trees.”

Activities & Links
The Klamath area is magical for people who love the outdoors. Redwood National Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Smith River National Recreation Area, and the Pacific coast are all within a 40-minute radius of the Inn. The area is sparsely populated (Del Norte County has about 28,000 people) and largely wilderness.
The parks are visited most heavily in the summer, but even then you won’t find the crowds that often come with National Parks. Fall and spring are even better times to experience the wildness of this place, and to watch the migration of whales off shore.
The Trees
We believe everyone should, at least once in their lifetime, stand quietly next to a 1,500-year-old, 300-plus-foot tree. The experience will put you in your place in the universe, making the petty concerns of daily life seem trivial.
The coast redwoods are the tallest living organisms on the planet. The tallest known coast redwood is 367.8 feet tall – taller than the Statue of Liberty. These trees have a life-span of 2,000 years. Most in our old-growth forests are 500 to 700 years old.
Hiking & Backpacking
You’ll find 164 miles of hiking trails in the area’s national and state parks, plus the California Coastal Trail is within walking distance of the Inn’s front door. Hiking here is pleasant even for those who aren’t in peak physical condition because many trails amble along, winding and going up and down, instead of going straight up a mountainside. It’s perfect country for day-hikers.
We like nothing more than seeing a group of backpackers heading down Requa Hill for a hot shower, a good meal, and a night in a comfortable bed. We provide free transportation to local trailheads.
Fishing
The Klamath and Smith Rivers are world-class steelhead and salmon rivers. We can arrange guided fishing tours, both river and ocean, for our guests who want to fish. The Klamath Chamber of Commerce website has an up-to-date listing of local guides. http://www.klamathcc.org/
Kayaking & Canoeing
Local rivers and lagoons are excellent places for kayaking and canoeing. We have several places to go for guided tours and boat rentals. Panther Creek park, within walking distance of the Inn, now offers paddling, both river and ocean trips. Check their website for details: www.goldriverguides.com. Also check these area business links: www.kayakzak.com (Orick); www.northcoastadventures.com (Trinidad); www.humboats.com (Eureka). Or give us a call and we will make arrangements for you.
Bicycling
The area has many mountain biking trails as well as country roads that are good for biking. We can provide secure storage for your bicycles when you stay at the Requa. You can also rent bicycles in Klamath at Kamp Klamath RV Park on the other side of the river. For more information, contact them at www.kampklamath.com.
Birding, Beachcombing, Whale-watching, and More
The Klamath area is also an excellent spot for birding (for excellent information on the Oregon Coast Birding Trail, and the California Redwoods Birding Trail, click here), beachcombing, whale watching (fall and spring migrations), stargazing, and watching the sun sink into the Pacific each evening.
And we often have reports of Bigfoot sightings in the area. :) Del Norte county and Klamath in particular are at the epicenter of Bigfoot research in North America these days. The world famous film of a Sasquatch walking in the open was shot in 1967 near Bluff Creek in Del Norte County. To see recent sighting reports click here. http://www.bfro.net/GDB/newadd.asp
